A Dream Rooted in Wellness

From the beginning, I believed that caring for ourselves should be about more than simply treating what is wrong. True wellness is about creating balance in our lives and developing practices that support us physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Yoga became a natural expression of that philosophy.

Through movement, we can become more aware of our bodies. Through breath, we can learn to slow down and reconnect with ourselves. Through stillness and rest, we can create space to simply be. And through community, we are reminded that we don’t have to navigate life’s challenges alone.

Those simple principles have remained at the heart of Essence of Yoga for the past 20 years.

Twenty Years of Change, Challenge & Growth

Of course, the journey has not always been easy.

Over the past two decades, we have experienced seasons of tremendous change and uncertainty. We weathered the financial crisis of 2007 and the challenges that followed. We faced the unprecedented uncertainty of COVID, including the difficult reality of closing our doors and finding new ways to stay connected.

And along the way, I have faced my own personal health challenges.

There were certainly moments when I wondered what the future would look like. But each difficult season taught me something important: resilience doesn’t mean that we never struggle. It means that we find a way to keep moving forward.

Just as we do in yoga, sometimes we have to pause. Sometimes we have to modify our practice. Sometimes we have to rest. And sometimes we simply have to take the next breath and begin again.

Through every difficult season, Essence of Yoga continued to rise.

The People Who Make Essence of Yoga What It Is

While celebrating 20 years, I know that this milestone does not belong to me alone.

Essence of Yoga is its people.

It is every student who has walked through our doors for the first time, perhaps feeling nervous or unsure, and discovered a place where they felt welcome.

It is the students who have returned week after week, year after year, making yoga part of their lives.

It is the teachers who have shared their knowledge, compassion, energy, and unique gifts.

It is the friends and family members who encouraged me and supported this dream, especially during the challenging times.

And it is the community that has grown around the studio—a community built not on perfection, but on connection.

I am deeply grateful to every person who has been part of this journey.

Your trust, encouragement, laughter, presence, and continued support have made Essence of Yoga possible.

Looking Back With Gratitude

Twenty years gives us plenty of opportunities to look back.

There are classes I remember, conversations that stayed with me, friendships that developed, and countless moments when I saw the positive impact that a yoga practice could have on someone’s life.

But perhaps what means the most to me is knowing that Essence of Yoga has been a place where people could come exactly as they are.

You don’t have to be flexible.

You don’t have to be experienced.

You don’t have to have everything figured out.

You simply have to show up.

Over the years, I have seen how powerful that simple act can be.

Showing up for ourselves is an act of self-care. Taking a breath is an act of awareness. Giving ourselves permission to rest is an act of compassion. And practicing alongside others reminds us of the importance of community and connection.

These lessons have been at the heart of my own journey as well.

Looking Ahead to the Next Chapter

As I celebrate this milestone, I am looking back with tremendous gratitude—but I am also looking ahead with hope and excitement.

Twenty years is not an ending. It is another beginning.

There is still so much to learn, experience, share, and discover.

I look forward to continuing to nurture a space where people can slow down, reconnect, move their bodies, breathe more deeply, and make their wellbeing a priority.

My hope is that Essence of Yoga will continue to be a place where people feel supported throughout all of life’s seasons—whether they are beginning a yoga practice, returning after time away, navigating a challenge, seeking greater balance, or simply looking for a little more peace in their day.

Celebrating 20 Years

To everyone who has been part of the Essence of Yoga journey:

Thank you.

Thank you for believing in this studio.

Thank you for showing up.

Thank you for sharing your energy and your stories.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your wellness journey.

And thank you for helping make a dream that began 20 years ago continue to grow.

As we celebrate this special anniversary, I am reminded that wellness is not a destination. It is a practice—a continual process of listening, learning, adapting, and beginning again.

So here’s to the next chapter.

Here’s to continuing to grow, heal, connect, and care for ourselves—together.

With gratitude,
Shirley
